A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York September 11, 1861, overstating his age by three years, and mustered into federal service there September 12 as a private with Co. I, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, rising to the rank of corporal. He developed a bad cough during the winter of 1861-62 and was wounded in the left hand at the battle of the Wilderness May 6, 1864. He was hospitalized for the wound at the time of muster-out but honorably discharged October 13, 1864, the same date others in the regiment whose terms of service had expired.
He married Alice Jane "Jennie" Lambert December 28, 1865, in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, and fathered Charles (b. 1867), Clara H. (b. 06/19/71 - married Vincent A. Collins), and Harry Eugene (b. 02/10/78). His surname is also found spelled "Hambaugh" and "Homebeck."
