OBITUARY: One of the aged Civil War veterans of this county died at the James Allison Apt. in West Fairfield on Wed. AM of last week after a long illness from troubles and complication incident to old age. Mr. Holmes spent a large part of the last several years as a resident of the Soldiers Home at Quincy, Illinois. He ws brought to this city a week or two ago and taken to the Allison Apt. by his son Arch Holmes. The body was taken to the Brown Church near his old home in Elm River Township Thur. PM. The burial took place there. Milton Holmes, son of William and Eliza Davis Holmes was born in Carroll County, Ohio, June 3, 1842. Passed away Jan. 16, 1929 at the age of 86 years, 7 mo and 13 days. He was married Mar. 15, 1866 to Emma Jobe. She passed way June 12, 1911. To this union eight children were born, three having passed to the beyond. He leaves to mourn at his going three daughters and two sons. Two half sisters, Mrs. Staton of Glenwood Springs, Colo and Mrs. Westfall of Pueblo, Colo., Amanda Grindstaff, Janie Hudson of Geff, Lettie Stevens of Fairfield, Oliver of Geff and Arch of Fairfield, 14 grandchildren, 11 Great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. About 1883, he was converted at the McLomdree Chapel in a meeting held by Re. J. D. Reeder and united with that church. He was of a kind disposition and no one in need ever called on him in vain. He served his country in the Civil War, going with Co. E 40th Illinois Infantry. While he lived to a good old age, he retained all his faculties to the last and always was in sympathy with any movement for the betterment of his fellow man.
