She was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Virden, the daughter of Richard and Agnes (McIlwaine) Smith.
She married James R. Gatton Sr. on April 2, 1942, in Virden; he passed away in 1983.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Virden.
She graduated from Virden High School Class of 1935.
She worked for Leggett Dry Goods in Virden as a clerk.
Surviving are her sons; James R. (wife, Sharon) Gatton of Kimberling City, Mo., Gary L. (wife, Terry) Gatton and Dennis L. Gatton both of Virden; daughter, Judy J. (husband, Charles) Rednour of New Tazwell, Tenn.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James R. Gatton Sr.; son, Richard Alex Gatton; brother, Andrew Smith; sister, Mildred Boyle; and a nephew.
Visitation will be Friday, June 1, 2007, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Calvert and Berry Funeral Home, Virden. Services will be held there at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007, with Chaplin William Hosking officiating.
Burial will be in the Virden Cemetery.
