B.G. Richardson, Passes Away At his Home At Hanlontown.
B.G. Richardson, one of the earliest settlers of Cerro Gordo County, passed away at his home in Hanlontown, on Tuesday Nov. 2, 1915. Mr. Richardson was born at Little York, Courtland Co. New York on August 3, 1840, Here he spent his early childhood. At 14 years of age he moved with his parents to Dane County, Wisconsin. He they remained 6 years, then moving to a farm nine miles east of Mason City. This was Sept. 1860, and from that time on he resided in this county, except for the past year or a little more, when he moved just across the line to Hanlontown. The winter of 1860 he taught school at Linn Grove, now Rockwell, and the next two winters he taught school at Lincoln township, in the Pence neighborhood.
In the fall of 1862 he was married to Miss Pence. In the following spring they had located on a farm in the Pence Grove neighborhood, and in this immediate locality they continued to reside until about a year ago, a period of about 53 years. To them, eight children were born, six of whom are living. Of late years Mr. Richardson had been in failing health, indirectly the result of general debility. At the time of his death he was over 75 years of age. He had been a hard worker nearly all his life, and was one of the best farmers in that neighborhood. He was a man of splendid character, a good neighbor and a man that was known all over the County and was universally respected and liked. He took a prominent part in politics, although he never asked or sought personal recognition of any kind.
For a great many ears he was a correspondent of the Mason City Republican and his writings touching various subjects were always read with great interest. In these writings he proved himself a man of broad views, a man of splendid education and good judgement. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Christian Church at Fertile, internment being made at the Lincoln Cemetery, where a son and daughter were buried years ago.

Since the date of his residence he has been continually in local office, and is now secretary of the school board, and has been justice of the peace for the last fourteen years. He is an adherent of the Republican party. His parents, S.M. and Locenia Richardson, emigrated from New York to Wisconsin, and in 1860 to Cerro Gordo Co., Iowa where they settled with their family. Mr. Richardson was born August 3, 1840 in Cortland co., NY and became a resident of Lincoln township in 1863. While a young man he was engaged summers in farming and in teaching winters. He was married in 1863 to Eliza J., daughter of Gabriel Pence. Mr. and Mrs. Richardson have the following children - Seth G., Ida M., Ralph, Roy, Rosa, Grace and Byron P. The homestead includes 174 acres of land.
