Lucy Ann DeSpain was a daughter of Peter DeSpain (1764-1850) AND Nancy Skaggs (1759-1840). Peter is buried in MT.Tabor Baptist church cemetery in LaRue County. He married 4 times. Nancy died before July 5, 1841 at Pitman's Creek, Green County.

Lucy married Elias Barbee Skaggs on 19 Feb 1846 in Green County, Kentucky. Date from "Old Marriage Certs Book C 1836-1861 Green County, Kentucky.

In the 1860 Taylor County census Lucy A. Skaggs is head of her house, family #42. She is 30 years of age, a farmer born in Kentucky. Her children are: Sarah A., 13; Richard, 12; Caroline, 10; Martha J., 8; and Ginsey, age 4 years. Lucy lives next door to Jerry Skaggs, age 24, on one side and James Roberts, age 41 on the other side of her.
Lucy was a defendant in a court case December 8, 1860 in Hodgenville, LaRue County, Kentucky. On December 8, William Howell, administrator of Henry Sympson's estate brought charges against Lucy Ann Skaggs and her minor children, the heirs of Elias Skaggs. It is assumed by some the reason for the suit was because her husband had been accused of murdering Henry Sympson for his gold and they wished to recover some of it for themselves.

In the 1870 Taylor County census, Lucyntha Skaggs was head of family #2 in the Saloma District. She was 53 years old and keeping house. The children were: Sallie A., 21; Richard, 21; Caroline, 17; Martha, 15; and Jincy, age 13 years.

Lucy Ann Skaggs vs. James Roberts, 19 December 1863

Lucy Ann Skaggs states that on November - - 1863, James Roberts said "You are a damned whore, a thief, and a rogue" in front of other people. She sues for slander for $3000.

On 22 February 1864 Lucy askes George W. Montague to withdraw the suit.
