BERLIN - Walter Kenneth Lindsey, 98 years young, died peacefully on October 23, 2000, while in the company of his family.

Walter was born on October 5, 1902, in Jonesboro, Maine, the son of Arthur F. and Alice Mae (Drisko) Lindsey. He grew up in Jonesboro, graduating from High School in 1920. Walter received his Bachelor's Degree from Bates College and his Master's in Education from the University of Maine. On December 15, 1926 Walter married Erma Wentworth in Union, Maine.

Walter was school principal in Maine in the towns of Beals Island, Union, Denmark, and Boothbay Harbor. After moving to Vermont in 1932 he held appointments as principal in the towns of Swanton, Wallingford, and Alburg. Upon retirement he moved back to Maine, returning to teaching for one more year at Georges Valley High School.

During his school career Walter's deep commitment to his students found his job expanding from that of Principal and Math and Science Teacher to include furnace stoker, janitor, baseball and basketball coach (boys and girls), drama director, counselor, and driver's education teacher. At his side his beloved wife Erma, a former student of his, was equally devoted to his students.

Walter and Erma enjoyed 72 plus years together. On the celebration of their 70th anniversary they received over 320 cards from former students. Returning to Union, Maine in 1963 they ran a roadside stand supplied by produce from their garden

Walter was a familiar face at the Union Fair where he sold tickets for nineteen years. His pastimes included flying kites, seeking out yard sales, traveling (his bag was always packed!), working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and baking bread and other delectables. Walter was an avid basketball and baseball fan and a prolific storyteller. One of Walter's greatest joys was meeting new people and visiting old friends wherever he went.

Walter was a past member of Union Masonic Lodge, Life Member of Mt. Moriah Order of Eastern Star in Denmark, Maine, Life Member of Vermont Retired Teachers, past President of the Rotary Club in Wallingford, and Scout Master in Beals Island, Maine and Swanton, Vermont.

Walter is survived by daughter Jane Staudt and husband Dick of Montpelier, VT, grandchildren Erin of Andover, MA, Kevin of Fairbanks, AK, Tamara of Portland, OR, Megan Fitzpatrick and husband Bob with children Casey and Lindsey of Haverhill, MA, and Kristyn Bradley and husband Ian with children Bianca Staudt and Parker of Montpelier, VT. Walter is also survived by sister-in-law Sara Wentworth of Camden, ME and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Walter was pre-deceased by his wife Erma Marie, son Maynard Kenneth, sister Hazel V., and brother Darrell.

A celebration of Walter's life will be held at Bethany Church, Main Street, Montpelier at 2:00 PM on December 27, 2000. A second service will be held in late spring in Union, ME (date to be announced). Memorial Contributions may be made to the Walter Lindsey Memorial Scholarship, c/o Edward L.
