Worthy B. Wood, 88, Adams County sheriff from 1935 to 1963, died Thursday at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. Mr. Wood was born near Norman and attended schools there. He graduated from Minden High School and resided in Nuckolls County until 1927.
He was Nuckolls County sheriff from 1923 until 1927. Following his term in Nuckolls County, Mr. Wood operated a garage and auto repair shop in Hastings.
He was a past president of both the Nebraska Sheriffs' Association and Hastings Kiwanis Club. He was the first Democrat ever elected to public office in Adams County and was active in that party, serving as chairman of the county Democrat Central Committee and a member of the state central committee. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 50, the York Rite and Shrine.
He is survived by a brother, Ernest of National City, Calif. a half-brother, James Wood of Idaho, and a niece, Dona Wolfe of Fort Collins, Colo.
