MARION CANNON HOPPE, 87, of Melbourne, FL died of heart failure - she was the daughter of General John K and LaVon Bennion Cannon for whom Cannon AFB in Clovis, NM was named. Her father and her husband were both career USAF pilots, and her son Bruce spent 8 years as a USAF pilot. Marion attended the University of Neuchatel in Switzerland, where she learned her superb cooking skills, attended the University of Utah and Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. Throughout her life, she volunteered as a member or in a leadership role for organizations such as the Officers Wives Club, Newcomers Club, AAUW, P.E.O., the Garden Club, book clubs, and her church. She loved working with and teaching children, particularly enjoyed her years as a volunteer docent at The Smithsonian, leading tours for school children, as well as her work in Florida at The Haven for Children in Melbourne. In the 1970s, Marion returned to school full-time at George Mason University in Virginia, where she earned her B.A. in English and then pursued her M.A. in English. Marion and George moved from McLean, VA to Melbourne. Preceded in death by her husband, George (married 1953); sister, Joan and Margie; daughter, Susan, surviving are children, Joan Snider (Charles) of St Cloud, FL, Bruce Hoppe (Jana) of Satellite Beach, FL and Steven Hoppe of Melbourne; 7 grandchildren & a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held September 22, 2017 at the Beach Funeral Home in Melbourne, FL. Services will be private. Published in FLORIDA TODAY on Sept. 21, 2017.
