Ella "Sandy" Matranga went to be with her Heavenly Father Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, with her family by her side in Soldotna at the age of 84.

Sandy was born Jan. 16, 1933 in Guthrie, Oklahoma to parents Raymond and Mary Reece.

She was the oldest of four children. Growing up, she lived in Oklahoma and California.

She earned her diploma from Grant Union High School and later obtained her nursing degree from Alaska Pacific University.

She worked as a telephone operator, school bus driver, waitress, florist, postmaster, upholsterer, traffic control, bookkeeper and nurse; she received her first check for nursing on her 50th birthday.

Sandy married George Matranga on May 27, 1951; they eloped to Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Their three children were born in California and in 1960 they moved the family to Alaska.

Sandy and George were some of the first pioneers in settling the Kenai Peninsula; they homesteaded 40 acres on Strawberry Road.

After the children were grown, they moved to Anchorage for a few years before retiring to Washington.

Sandy had a strong faith in God and a deep love for her family; she was a wonderful example and a prayer warrior to all.

She left a spiritual heritage for many generations inspired by her love for God and family.

Whenever there was a need of any kind, Sandy always pitched in and gave whether it was meals, missions, volunteering or a sincere offer of prayer.

She was very active in bible study groups her local church and outreach programs.

Her hobbies were sewing, crafts, farming and gardening as Sandy loved flowers of all kinds, carnations being her favorite.

Preceded in death by her husband, George Matranga; parents, Raymond and Mary Reece and brother, Arlis Wayne Reece.

She is survived by her sons, Greg and wife, Teresa Matranga of Soldotna, Alaska and Brian and wife, Hope Matranga of LaCenter, Washington; daughter, Carey and husband, Jack Foster of Soldotna, Alaska; sister, Gloria and husband, Ardie Manouel of Fresno, California; brother, Phillip and wife, Sandie Reece of Fresno, California; 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Ella's life will be held at a later date.
