On Aug. 3, 1913, Viola May (Hart) Alger was born to Ernest E. and Hattie L. (Jones) Hart near Geary, and departed this life in Oklahoma City on March 8, 2007, at the age of 93 years.
Early in life, Viola gave her heart and life to Christ — a commitment to which she remained faithful throughout the years which lay ahead. As a member of the Methodist Church of Geary, Viola served at various times as a Sunday school teacher, secretary and youth sponsor. She also served as youth sponsor of the Calumet Youth Group during her tenure as high school instructor in that community. In 1977, she placed her membership in Southern Heights Baptist Church of El Reno, of which she was a member at the time of her death. Always, in all things, Viola strove to keep Christian ideals as her guiding force in life. God was her acknowledged pilot.
On July 9, 1956, Viola was united in marriage to Clyde Alger at Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno. Since that time, El Reno has been home. For 43 years until the time of Clyde's death on Aug. 24, 1999, they shared the joys and sorrows of life together. Viola was a lifelong resident of Canadian County.
Viola graduated from Geary High School in 1931 and later attended Southwestern State Teachers College, graduating with honors as she received her A.B. degree with majors in math and social studies with teaching certificates in elementary education, high school science and business education. Later she completed work at OU, OSU and SWOSU to complete her master's degree in teaching in 1965.
For eight years, Viola taught in the rural schools of Blaine and Canadian counties before beginning her career as high school instructor. For 19 years she taught at Calumet High School — serving the last eight years there as high school principal before accepting a position at El Reno High School as instructor of mathematics. From this position Viola retired in 1974 after completing 38 continuous years of teaching in the public schools of Oklahoma.
During that time, Viola attained membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority of leading women educators, held life membership in Mu Alpha Theta, a national fraternity of outstanding mathematicians, and in 1974 was named Outstanding Teacher of Secondary Schools in El Reno. She also held membership in local, state and national education and in retired educators associations.
And now, as written by an unknown author, "She has found in life eternal the peace after the tumult is over; the calm after the storm has passed, the joy of victory after the battle is won."
Viola was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters and four brothers; and one great-great-nephew.
Left to cherish many fond and loving memories are three nieces, four great-nephews, three great-nieces, three great-great-nephews and one great-great-niece; and other relatives and friends as well as many students whose lives she touched during her years of teaching and whose lives had become a part of hers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2007, in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the El Reno Cemetery with Rev. Paul Roach officiating. Services are under direction of Wilson Funeral Home.
