Robert S. Greene, 86, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2000.
Born in Brunswick, Ga., he moved to Miami as a child with his parents and two sisters. He served in the U. S. 578th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion and saw action in the Northern Solomon's Campaign during World War II. Upon his retirement from Atlantic Refining (ARCO) in 1969, and his wife's retirement from the Dade County School system, they purchased their riverfront home in Welaka. During their 52 years of marriage, the Greenes were never without a boat and their love of the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay was quickly replaced by the tranquil St. Johns River.
Mr. Greene is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Christine, and sister, Madeline Rowe. He is survived by his sister, Betty Bergsaker of Portland, Oregon; five great nieces and three great nephews residing in South Carolina, Georgia and Arizona, Irene Morrison, Christine Lewis, Terry Kornahrens, Kathy Gonzales, Maggie McCoy, James Rowe, Robert Rowe, Jr. and Michael W. Munn. Other family members Mr. Greene has retained a close relationship with included his wife's sister-in-law, Marie Cassels, formerly of Spring Creek, San Mateo, now residing in Winston Salem, N. C., and her four children, David Cassels, Capt. William A. Cassels and his wife, Marylee, Patti Ross and James L. Cassels and their seven children. Memorial service will be held Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the Hope Lutheran Church, Hwy. 309 and Hamilton Road, Satsuma, Fl. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association of North Eastern Florida, Chapter 2131, Mango Place, Jacksonville, Fl 32207 or locally, Putnam County Alzheimer Support Group, P. O. Box 127, Hollister, Fl 32147, Attn: Rita Perry. Watts Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
