WELAKA – Memorial services for Mary Christine Greene, 90, who passed away on Good Friday, April 2, 1999, at Vencor Hospital, Green Cove Springs, will be held Monday, 9 a.m., in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Welaka with Father Frank Chilton officiating. Christine and her surviving husband, Robert, moved to Welaka from Miami in 1970. Born in Gainesville and a graduate of Florida State University, she taught adult business courses at Lindsey-Hopkins Vocational School in Miami until her retirement. Retiring to a home on the banks of her beloved St. Johns River was a "coming home" experience for her. For it was while her father, William Henry Cassels, was a principal of schools in Palatka that Christine was also educated in Putnam County. For the past 27 years she was an active member and volunteer of the Woman’s Club of Welaka – serving on the library committee and wherever her presence was needed. Gardening had always been her favorite hobby and the Garden Club of Welaka benefited from her knowledge and participation. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert; sister-in-law, Marie Cassels of San Mateo; nephews, David Cassels of Winston-Salem, N.C., Capt. William A. Cassels of Miami, and James L. Cassels of Sagle, Idaho; cousin, Carl Cassels; niece, Patti Ross of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven great-nieces and two great-nephews. Other family members Christine retained a close relationship with included her husband’s five great-nieces and three great-nephews residing in South Carolina, Georgia and Arizona. Irene Morrison, Christine Lewis, Terry Kornahrens, Kathy Gonzales, Maggie McCoy, James Rowe, Robert Rowe Jr., and Michael W. Munn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association North Eastern Florida Chapter, 2131 Mango Place, Jacksonville, FL 32207 or locally – Putnam County Alzheimer Support Group, P.O. Box 127, Hollister, FL 32147, Attn: Rita Perry. Watts Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
