Helena Waterman studied music and was an accomplished pianist and instructor. She graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Aug 1916 at the age of 39. Two months later, in Oct 1916, Helena was appointed missionary to China through the China Boat Mission. She and other missionaries lived on a boat and evangelized the people who lived in the harbor. She eventually taught music in a Chinese school. After five years, Helena returned to Chicago, and continued to make a living through giving private music lessons.
