For Retired Farmer

Ernie Black 72, Westport, a retired farmer died at 3:10 p.m. Monday at Memorial Hospital here. He had been in failing health for the past three years and seriously ill for the past week.

A native of the Brewersville, Community in Jennings County, he was born July 27, 1897 the son of John and Martha Sampson Black.

A farmer in the Westport Community for many years, he moved to Westport upon his retirement 11 years ago.

He married Sept. 21, 1921 in Decatur County to Lula Inez Owens, who survives. He was a member of the former Brewersville E.U.B. Church.

Surviving with the widow are: two sons, Allen E. Black of Washington, D.C., and Norman Dale Black who is stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Japan; five daughters, Mrs. Hugh (Dorothy) Colsher, Jon (Marilyn) Oldham and Mrs. Charles (Ethel) Dougherty, all of Westport, Mrs. Lewis (Rosezetta) Schlechtweg of Wilkinson and Mrs. William (Margaret) Schlechtweg, whose husband is stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Austin, Texas, a brother Henry Black of Greensburg; a half brother Fred B. Houpey of R.R. 2 Westport; 21 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Ruth Paluline Black in infancy, a son Robert Black, in infancy, a brother John Elmer Black, three sisters, Mrs. Eva Byrum, Mrs. Clara Porter and one in infancy, a grandson Michael Ernie Schlechtweg.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Bass Funeral Home at Westport with the Rev. Alton Cutshall of Mt. Aerie Baptist Church at Letts and the Rev. Paul Byard of North Vernon charge of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Westport Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
