A sign at the Hart Family Cemetery entrance (see photo) indicates that William J. Hart in 1864 was the second person buried there, the first having been Nellie Hart in 1860. William J., a Confederate soldier who deserted during the war, was traveling to Washington D.C. to be granted a US Government pardon for desertion when he killed by a train. Family oral history accounts indicate that the family was opposed to slavery and did not wholeheartedly support the Confederate cause.
