Prison reform pioneer. Founder and supervisor of the Central Howard Association in Chicago (now the John Howard Association). It was founded in 1901 to provide critical citizen oversight of the state's adult and juvenile correctional facilities, and remains the only non-partisan organization monitoring prisons in Illinois.

He was the author of many articles and the book "The Art of Living" (1905).

Son of Sydney A. Lyon and Mary Potter. Married first, Jennie Charity Vredenburg, 21 Aug 1888, in Council Bluffs, IA.

1. Genevieve; b. Jul 1892, d. 25 Jun 1916; m. John Murray Anderson.
2. Caroline "Carrie" Evelyn, b. 24 Apr 1894; married John C. Smith, 1931, in Burlington, MA. Artist who won a national poster contest for encouraging enlistment in World War I.
3. Enid Marie, b. 21 Aug 1895, d. 26 Aug 1959; m. Walter Lee Jones.
4. Pierre Waldo, b. 28 Sep 1900, d. 11 Feb 1963.

Married second, Maude Whitlock.
