Thayer, Virginia , nee Botz, 95, of Casselberry, was born Oct. 16, 1921 in St. Cloud, Minn., and died Aug. 25 in Winter Park after a stroke on Aug. 9. She lived in Arlington, Mass. for 51 years and moved to Casselberry in 2006. She earned a B.S. in elementary education (St. Cloud St. U., 1943) and an M.Ed. in counseling (Northeastern U., 1970). During World War II she worked for the Selective Service System in Washington, D.C. She was a mental health counselor for 13 years and retired in 1984 to immerse herself in writing and art. She began writing in 1968 and studied poetry (Radcliffe Inst. for Continuing Study), playwriting (Brandeis U.), and various art media. From 1993 to 2017 she published poems or stories in several magazines, self-published four poetry books and a collage-based children's book, and exhibited artwork in several shows. She was active in Unitarian churches of Arlington and Orlando, Arlington League of Women Voters, and New England Poetry Club, and was an avid bridge player at Casselberry Senior Center. She is survived by children Philip Jr., Margaret (Alfred Newton), and Elizabeth; granddaughter Chelsea; and great grandson Seth DosReis. She was predeceased by her former husband, Philip Thayer, Sr. Services Monday, 10:00 am, at First Unitarian Church of Orlando, 1901 E Robinson St. Donations may be made to First Unitarian Church of Orlando or Amnesty International.
