Singer. Born Samuel Goldberg in Dorchester, Massachusetts, he was a popular singer and entertainer during the 1930s and 1940s. He began his career in 1934, singing on Benny Goodman's radio show and started to perform on "Your Hit Parade" radio show in 1936. In 1937, he had his first top-20 hit with "Spring Is Here" and sang on the movie sound track for "Wake up and Live" (1937). Signed to Columbia Records in the early 1940s, he had a string of hits such as "Never in a Million Years", "Linda", "I'll Dance at Your Wedding" and "It's Swell of You". He continued recording and appeared in the films "Seven Days Leave" (1942) and "Song of Surrender" (1949). Just as he was reaching new heights in his career, he was killed in a plane crash just outside Los Angeles, California, at age 37.
