Verna Brooks Sickel of Walker, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids, Minn.

She was born Nov. 28, 1916, to Leo and Geneva (Padget) Brooks in Waterloo, Iowa. She was raised in Waterloo and graduated from East High in 1935. Early in her adult life, she married Jack Becker but was widowed when her husband, a pilot, was killed in World War II. She married Glenn A. Sickel June 16, 1946. She had a special interest in history and philosophy and from 1968-69, attended Teacher's College simply to improve her base of knowledge She was employed as a telephone operator, and retired in 1971 after a 36-year career with Northwestern Bell.

For many years, family vacations were spent fishing on Leech Lake in northern Minnesota. Soon after she retired, she and her husband made their lake home their primary one, moving into Walker only when advancing age forced them to do so. In 2002, her husband Glenn passed away.

She especially enjoyed watching sunsets over the lake. She also liked watching mysteries and old movies and was an avid Cubs fan. Attending a game at Wrigley Field in Chicago was a major highlight of her life.
