Funeral Mass will be Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Browns Valley with Father Gregory Frankman officiating. The organist will be Lana Sand and the vocalist will be Leona’s great-granddaughter, Christina Norton.
Burial will be in the St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery in Browns Valley. Honorary casket bearers will be Leona’s granddaughters: Elena Wiss and Barbara Ascheman. Active casket bearers will be Leona’s grandsons: Bryan Stadtler; Paul Stadtler; Mike Wiss; Matt Wiss; Duane Reimers; Richard Reimers and Christopher Hanson.
Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD is in charge of the arrangements.
Leona Mathilda (Wolter) Layden daughter of Gust and Margaret (Faber) Wolter was born in Browns Valley, MN on June 26, 1920. She attended school in Browns Valley and graduated in 1938.
Leona was united in marriage to Robert H. Layden on September 14, 1938. To this union five children were born: Janet; Carole; MaryAnn; James and Linda. Leona was a homemaker and worked at the Browns Valley Health Center from 1975 to 1978.
Leona was a member of the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed bowling, camping, needle work, embroidery, playing cards and board games. Leona also enjoyed the time spent at their lake cabin.
Survivors include her four daughters: Janet (Don) Rasmussen; Carole Wiss; MaryAnn Reimers and Linda Hanson; son: James (L.E. Warnke) Layden; nine grandchildren: Bryan Stadtler; Barbara (Jim) Ascheman; Paul (Julie) Stadtler; Elena (Gary Werner) Wiss; Michael (Diane) Wiss; Matthew Wiss; Duane Reimers; Richard (Ann) Reimers and Christopher (Kate) Hanson; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Bob; sisters: Marie; Rose; Ruth and Rita; brothers: Matt; Alfred and Henry; sister-in-law: Eleanor (Clarke) Willett; brothers-in-law Howard and Donald Layden; son-in-law: Wayne Stadtler; and grandson: Greg Stadtler.
