The son of William & Catherine Baldwin, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 6' 0" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Frankstown, Blair County, August 26, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 16 as a private with Co. D, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.

He married Mary A. Warren and fathered Harry (b. @1875), In 1890, he lived in Menallen Township, Adams County.
