Mack was born on February 18, 1925 in Laurens County, Dublin, Ga. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Edwena Powell Bankston; his father, Leslie Carl Bankston; mother, Maude Ester Childers Bankston; daughter, Gail Patricia Leddy, one brother and three sisters.
Mack joined the Navy and fought in the Pacific during World War II. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, and many other metals. He left the Navy at the end of the war and went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller. Upon his retirement, he returned to Dublin and eventually built and operated Pinetucky Campground and Propane. He was a member of Rentz Baptist Church. Mack was also a Mason and member of the Masonic Lodge of Dublin and an avid golfer.
He is survived by his daughter, Shelley M. Watkins and her husband William “Bill” Mark Watkins, Jr. of Evans, GA; two sons, Gary “Mike” Bankston, and his wife Donna, of Vidalia, GA and Brent Campbell, and his wife Martha, of Northborough, MA; eight grandchildren, Dawn Yarbrough (Daniel), of Cypress TX, Eric Yarbrough (Ashley) of Greensboro, GA, Dennie Yarbrough (Jenny) of Durango, CO, Connor Watkins of Phoenix, AZ, Micah Leddy of Columbia, SC, Leslie Ann Leddy of Boulder, CO, Lindsey Blount (Chris) of Vidalia, GA, and Julie Bankanella (Gia) of Pueblo, CO, and seven great grand children.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Dublin Memorial Gardens. Bro. Tom Vann will officiate.
