Elma Laird Dies May 16 in Seattle, Wash.

Elma, daughter of Elizabeth and Sam Steffy, was born on a farm north of Victor on Nov. 23, 1889 and passed away in Seattle, Wash. on May 16 at 86 years of age.

"Kit" attended rural school and Victor high school, graduating with the Class of 1903. For a few years she worked as a telephone operator in Victor.

On Oct. 6, 1910 she was united in marriage to Charles Laird. To this union two children were born. They made their home in Des Moines until Mr. Laird's retirement when they moved to Branson, MO. Mr.and Mrs. Laird spent many summers in Montezuma.

Since the death of her husband in 1968 she has been cared for in the home of her daughter in Seattle, Wash.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by their son, Charles, in 1959.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty and her husband, Harvey Beekout of Seattle, her daughter-in-laaw, Mrs. Ruth Laird, two grandchildren, Jim and Vickie Laird, one great granddaughter, all of Brookings, SD; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Swecker of Montezuma; one brother, Harry Steffy of Camarillo, CA., other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday May 20, at 1:30 p.m. from the Steffy Funeral Home in Montezuma. Rev. Martin Gruenich officiated. Burial was in the IOOF cemetery at Victor.
