Otto received only a 6th grade education. He was a machinist in St. Louis and was a member of a branch of the Masons all of his life.

After his marriage to Lena Laufer and the birth of their three children, he moved the family to Los Angeles, California. There he worked as a rough-finish carpenter, eventually becoming foreman of a construction crew for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. After retiring, he continued to work for a small lumber company during World War II.

Sometime in his younger years he lost a forefinger due to a job-related accident. Also, as a young man he had an operation in which chloroform was used as the anesthetic. Soon after the operation his hair began to fall out, causing premature baldness.

Otto had blue eyes, brown hair, was 5 feet 7 inches tall and was quite strong. At age 70, he made chain link fencing by hand from heavy wire in his garage workshop. In addition to fencing his own yard, he gave the fencing away - enough to fence the properties of his children,
