Betty Jane McClellan died on August 30, 2017 at Buckingham's Choice, Adamstown, MD where she had resided since 2015.

Betty was born on January 11, 1927 in Frederick, MD to the late Robert Paul and Ella Mae Milyard Marendt. She held fond memories of her attendance at Parkway Elementary and Frederick High School, from where she graduated in 1944. Betty enjoyed helping with organizing and attending Frederick High class reunions for many years following graduation. Following graduation, Betty worked in the Registrar's Office at Hood College for several years.

In 1946, Betty married James E. "Doc" McClellan, also of Frederick, who had just completed service in the U.S. Army, having served in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II. Several years later, the young couple moved to Athens, Georgia where "Doc" attended the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. Following their return to Frederick in 1955, the couple settled into their home on Rockwell Terrace where they would reside for 60 years, raise 6 children and over the years, see their family grow to include 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Betty derived great pleasure from her home and family.

Betty was very active in the Frederick community, serving in a number of civic and charitable organizations. She was a member of the Junior Woman's Club, serving as President from 1948 - 49, the Frederick Woman's Civic Club, chairing and co-chairing several Mardi Gras Balls, and the Women's Democratic League.

In addition, Betty attended St. John's Catholic Church and was a member and past Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Court, St. John's Catholic Church.

Following the opening of Citizens Nursing Home in 1975, Betty help to organize the Auxiliary, serving several terms as President of the Auxiliary as well as several terms on the Board of Trustees of Citizens Nursing Home.

Over the years, Betty was active in numerous fund raisers for local organizations including the Frederick Arts Council, the Weinberg Center, the Delaplaine Arts Center and the Alzheimer's Association.

Betty was an avid gardener, treasuring the time spent tending to her gardens. In earlier years, she was a member of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club. Betty was especially honored when her home was selected to be on the Christmas Candlelight House Tour and later the Spring Home & Garden Tour. After moving to Buckingham's Choice, Betty was able to enjoy her cottage's garden, albeit on a much smaller scale than that at Rockwell Terrace.

Betty is survived by her 6 children: James R. McClellan and wife Jane of Frederick, Gail Snyder and husband Jim of Williamsburg, VA, J. Bernard McClellan and wife Cathy of Baltimore, Barbara Stanley of Frederick, Debby McClellan and husband Jim Morrison of Beaufort, SC and Terry McArthur and husband Roger of Frederick; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Pauline Marendt of Frederick; nieces Susan Johnson and Libby Cleaveland of Frederick; and cousin Peggy Lou Githerman of Frederick. She was pre-deceased by her husband of nearly 70 years, James E. "Doc" McClellan, who died in 2016.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4pm on Monday, September 4th at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E Church Street, Frederick. Private funeral services will be held with interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

Those desiring may make a contribution to the Auxiliary of Citizen's Care & Rehabilitation Center, 1920 Rosemont Avenue, Frederick, MD, 21702 or St. John's Church, 114 East 2nd Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
