Mellie was born in Eros, Louisiana, December 9, 1922, to farmer Jesse George Head and Hellen Alena Garrett Head. Following her graduation from Chatham High School she attended Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now Louisiana Tech). Mellie taught at Bolton High School in Alexandria, Louisiana, before enlisting in the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Service) in September 1943. After training Ensign Mellie Head deployed to Guam in the Pacific. Guam had been liberated from the Japanese in August 1944 and became a major military base during the final year of World War II. Mellie married Robert L. Morris in 1947 and they raised two children, Gretchen and Robert. Following Robert's retirement from the Navy he worked in international business before he and Mellie settled in Norfolk. After 15 years in Norfolk they moved to Orange, Virginia. Mellie passed away August 17, 2017, and was buried in Section 4 of Culpeper National Cemetery. Robert joined her there following his death November 3, 2019.
