Herman Eugene Sloan, 79, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at home under the care of Hospice of the Golden Isles after a sudden illness.

Herman was born on July 19, 1938 in Hortense to the late William Arthur and Mary Adams Sloan. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps and worked for many years as a pipefitter and welder with B & W in Brunswick before opening his own business, Sloan Roofing and Repairs Inc., which he was still operating until about three months before his death. He was a member of One Life at a Time Ministries in Hortense and a former member of Civitan International in Brunswick. He was a hard worker and devoted himself to his family. In his spare time, Herman enjoyed putting puzzles together and spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, his former wife, Barbara Dean Teston Sloan; his sisters, Onie Flowers, Florence Blaylock and Ocie Flowers; his brother, Burt Sloan and his two sons-in-law, Richard Davis and Richard Taylor preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife and loyal companion of over thirty years, Marie Sloan of Brunswick; children, Anthony Eugene Sloan and wife Brittany of Brunswick, Micheal Short and wife, Gwen of Hickox, Donna Elizabeth Davis of Hortense, Deborah Sue Davis and husband, Jimmy of Hortense, Tina Cheyenne Taylor of Brunswick, Angela Alewine and husband, Mike of Hortense and Lena Cheyenne Sloan of Calhoun, GA; sister, Zubie Wolverton and husband, Jack of King, NC; brothers, William “Vet” Sloan and wife, Burnette of Brunswick, Eugene Sloan and wife, Lois of Jesup, Allen Sloan and wife, Sarah of Buford, GA, Herschel Sloan and wife, Patricia of Cape Coral, FL and Robert Sloan and wife, Iris of Hortense, GA; fourteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the Hortense Church of God of Prophecy with Reverends Jimmy Davis, Larry Johns, Hinton Johnson and Rob Hutto officiating.

Interment will follow in Satilla Cemetery with military honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps.

Active pallbearers will be Wayne Flowers, Howard Flowers, Ross Flowers, Lloyd Flowers, Wendell Flowers, Jim Westberry, Chris Wolverton and Hugh Wolverton.
