Mervene Lois Fitzsimmons was born on July 24, 1928 to Earl and Esther (Hoevet) Fitzsimmons in Cedar Township, Martin County, Minnesota. She attended and later was a 1945 graduate of Triumph High School. On June 22, 1947 she was united in marriage to Edward Bottin at Trimont, Minnesota and later were divorced. She worked for Ford Garage in Triumph. Mervene waitressed at various places in the Sherburn area and helped with catering events. On December 26, 1957, she was united in marriage to Frank "Bus" Spear at Estherville, Iowa. After their marriage they lived and farmed in Sherburn area. Mervene worked at the Jackson Sale Barn and at various Grocery Stores in Sherburn. Frank died on March 8, 1983. She continued living in the Sherburn area until moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to be near her daughters. Mervene became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Sherburn and was a member and held various offices in the Sherburn V.F.W. Auxiliary. She greatly enjoyed being with family and doing handi work, such as making afghans, crocheting and sewing. Baking, playing cards and watching the Minnesota Twins were very special to Mervene.

Mervene died on Saturday afternoon, March 3, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of seventy-eight years.

Left to cherish Mervene's memory are her four children, daughter, Lois Engels and her husband, Hank, of rural Wilmont, Minnesota, son, Bob Spear and his wife, Jann, of rural Welcome, Minnesota, daughter, Shirley Koball and her husband, Kal, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, daughter, Marie Thoelke and her husband, Scott, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; seven grandchildren, Bill Engels and his wife, Jylene, of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Jannette Engels of Wilmont, Minnesota, Patrick Engels of Wilmont, Minnesota, Kenan Koball of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Skyler, Taylor and MacGyver Spear all of rural Welcome, Minnesota; a great-granddaughter, Samantha; sister-in-law, Ellen Spear of Wadena, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Gene Amley of New Richland, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Mervene in death were her parents, husbands and other relatives and friends.
