ALLEEN WIGGS SCANLON entered into her heavenly home on Saturday, May 20, 2017. She was born July 21, 1924 at Littles, Indiana five miles from Petersburg, IN. At the age of 13, she and her parents moved to Muncie, IN where she attended Muncie Central High School and graduated in 1941 at age 17. After graduation, she and her parents moved to New Albany, IN. In 1943, she met Thomas E. Scanlon and they were married in 1944. Alleen’s first employment in New Albany was with Judge D. Kirke Hedden. Later she became secretary for John A. Cody, Jr. (this was home of Justice Sherman Minton) for 7 years. Years later, she became secretary for two Methodist District Superintendents, for 12 years Rev. Kenneth Forbes and Rev. Merlin Schwein. She was a 70 plus year member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and was President of United Methodist Women for 8 years. She greatly enjoyed children’s Bible School held at Centenary for many years. Alleen was Past Regent of Piankeshaw Chapter of DAR and 70 plus year member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was also a member of the Coterie Club of New Albany. Alleen was the author of several published Books of Poetry and was nominated for Poet Laureate of Indiana. These endeavors gave her great joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Earl Scanlon; and grandson, Drew Thomas Miller.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Rebecca Dedman (John); granddaughter, Carrie Elizabeth Dunham (Tony); two great granddaughters, Elizabeth Brooke Sparks (John) and MaKayla Rebecca Ritchey; and one great grandson, Cody Thomas Ritchey.

It was her wish to have a Funeral Service at 11:30 am Wednesday in the Kraft Spring Street Chapel with private burial in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany.
