William R. (Bill) Bartee, age 91, went home to glory on August 3, 2017. He was born on April 15, 1926, in Nashville, Tennessee, to parents James Irvin Bartee and Lena Elma Nolan Bartee. Bill was reared on his family farm in Palmyra near a picturesque bluff on the Cumberland River and attended college at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

Bill retired a Master Sergeant in the US Air Force. His military service began in 1944 during WWII when the Army Air Corps was facing its most dangerous logistical challenge. The Corps was part of a complex supply chain that provided support to forces (that had invaded the beaches of Normandy and were defending the crossroads of Europe in the Battle of the Bulge), making it possible for Allies to continue advancing eastward and retake Northern Europe. In Antwerp, Belgium, the Corps was besieged by an impregnable Nazi rocket that travelled at supersonic speeds. Despite losses and no known defense, their supply efforts continued, defending ground from Nazi recapture. Bill's efforts to protect freedom continued in the Pacific in Okinawa, Japan, and later during the Korean conflict and Vietnam War. A few years after his daughter's birth, Bill retired from active duty and joined civil service. His service to America spanned over four decades.

The unrelenting adversary Bill encountered in Europe and the Pacific, was a mirror of the enemy he faced in his own life. He found freedom and was born again on September 17, 1950, as a child of the King, his savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. He considered his witness of what the precious Holy Spirit had done for him a charge to keep and a duty to fulfill. From his salvation until his final hours, he understood the enemy of life was real, and he implored others to find Jesus and experience His saving grace.

Bill also served his community and supported the rescue mission in the heart of that city. As a member and deacon of First Baptist Church, he was a leader in the Barnabas program, and he taught Bible lessons and sang hymns at Alta Vista and Chandler Nursing Homes for 15 years. Bill enjoyed staying active and working outside in his yard, cultivating apples, beautiful roses and sun-ripened tomatoes. He loved animals, and his favorite pastime was baseball.

Bill is survived by his daughter and grandson. He is preceded in death by Zada Vee Stewart Bartee (his wife of 54 years), his parents, Donald Edward Bartee (his only sibling), nieces and nephews. Bill's visitation and funeral will be held at 11:00 AM and noon, respectively, Monday, August 21st, at First Baptist Church of San Antonio, 515 McCullough. His interment with military honors will be at 2:00 PM in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the television ministry of First Baptist Church San Antonio.
