Veteran George Alford sailed to Monroe Michigan from New York State in 1818 with his son, John and brother Elijah, in a small sloop coasting on the south shore of Lake Erie, camping nights. He died 18 years later and was buried in Woodland Cemetery. He had been a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church and had lived on Second St. between Harrison and Cass. In May, 1779 George, then 15, entered military service in the Vermont line as a private substituting for Benjamin Johnson of Rutland, Vt. The enlistment finished, he was drafted and then mustered in as a Minute Man, remaining in this capacity until the close of the war. Part of his duties had been as a scout and he served under such officers as General Stark and Col. Ethan Allen. He was elected Marshal and became Chief of Police in Monroe. George is on the 1850 Monroe census, so the death date of 1836 on his grave marker is incorrect. His birth date is in question, as https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F74V-WX9 has that he was born March 30, 1761.
DAR has his birth as March 10, 1764
James Gunn [email protected] sent the following information; a son of Benedict Alford Jr. (1716-1812) and Rebecca Owen (1736-1790).
