GREENSBORO - William Byrd "Bill" Piephoff died on February 29, 2012 at home at the age of 85, and from the day of his 85th birthday when asked his age, said he was "going on 86". Bill was born on December 20, 1926 to Melvin Buford and Flo Alice Byrd Piephoff, the last of their three children. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Rebecca Allred and his first wife Ann.

He fell in love with Ann Shuffler while attending college following service in the Navy during World War II. In 1970, he tragically lost her in an automobile accident. In 1971 he married Judy Neal White and called her daughter Debbie his only girl.

Bill and Ann were loving parents to three sons, Bruce (wife Laura Dodd), Dale and Danny. Bill has five grandchildren: Bruce and Laura's son David, Dale's son Bryan and daughters Lindsay and Bridget, and Danny's son Evan. He was very proud to also be a Great-Grandfather to Lindsay's son Zackary.

Bill spent his young adult years establishing and running what was then known as The Greensboro Health Club. Before physical fitness was the "in" thing to do, he trained and sponsored countless men and women in the art of exercise and fitness. He was a champion weightlifter and body-builder and won the title of Mr. North and South Carolina during his years of training. In 1994 he was elected to the North Carolina Weightlifting Hall of Fame.

Following his retirement from physical training in Greensboro, he enjoyed local renown in Northern Arizona for his wood carvings of the Grand Canyon. Bill loved being in nature and hiking the canyon trails. He listened to and made music, from opera to country. He enjoyed solitude.

He is survived by Judy, his wife of 40 years, his big sister Margaret "Peg" Cheek, his three sons and step-daughter, his grand and great-grandchildren, Janet Hitchens his grandson's mother, friends in Greensboro and in Flagstaff, Arizona where he and Judy lived for 32 years and, of eminent importance, his beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Goodie Two Shoes.

Bill bequeathed his body to science. A memorial service celebrating Bill's life will be held at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church on Hilltop Road, Saturday, March 10 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Timothy's United Methodist Church.
