Erik was 5 and lived with his mother Maximina Sanchez Barron, in Memphis, Tennessee when he disappeared. The two of them shared an apartment; Barron was divorced from Erik's father who lives in Mexico. On March 13, 2000, Barron, who was seven months pregnant, was found by her sister, asphyxiated in her apartment. Erik was missing, apparently kidnapped by whoever killed Barron. He had last been seen the night before, eating ice cream in his driveway. Police searched for Erik for more than two months. His skeletal remains were found on May 24, 2000, on the banks of the Wolf River in Memphis. As of April 2004, his murder and his mother's both remain unsolved.
