Bennie Earlene (Berry) Hambrick Raney

Mrs. Raney was born November 12, 1934 in Lufkin, Texas, and died Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at her residence in Brazoria. She resided in Lufkin for 20 years and then spent 30 years in the Freeport area. She was a homemaker and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held August 19, 2017 in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington. Interment will follow in the W.M. Berry Cemetery.

Bennie was the oldest of 10 children born to Winfred and Thelma (Nerren) Berry. She was the glue that held the family together, taking in most of her brothers and sisters at one time or another, helping each other out with life. She learned to sew at age 7 which followed her throughout life. She could also knit and crochet, and made so many quilts for the family. Her cooking was the best out of anyone we knew. She could make a meal for six stretch into a meal for 10 if someone happened to drop by at meal time. She was always prepared to feed anyone down on their luck, even sometimes when we were barely feeding ourselves, like during the Dow Strike in the 70’s. She loved to garden, always having plenty of vegetables to share with others, and putting up many jars of her famous vegetable soup and salsa which everyone fought over. She loved her family more than anything. Her whole face lit up with every phone call or visit she received, especially the grandbabies.

Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Harlen and husband John, Cheryl McCombs and fiance’ Eddie Elizaitisn; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Geraldine Hamlet and husband John; brother, Sam Berry and wife Sue; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glynn Burton Raney; two children, Billy Hambrick and Deby Morris; sisters, Jane Hankins, Sallie McCreary and Sue Wright; and brothers, W.M. Berry, Ralph Berry, Arthur Berry, and Mickey Berry.
