Sam Adrel Spence, age 96 of Lubbock, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017. Graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Floyd County Memorial Park. Memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the First Christian Church in Lubbock. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m.~6:00 p.m., Friday, August 25, 2017 at Moore Rose Funeral Home of Floydada. Arrangements are under the care of Moore Rose Funeral Home of Floydada.

Sam Adrel Spence was born in Floyd County to Charley and Maylon Spence, they lived in Sand Hill then moved to Floydada where he attended and graduated from Floydada High School in 1940. Sam was in the WWII, U.S Army where he received 5 bronze stars. In 1948, he married Audrey Wood Asher and took her daughter Mary Kay Asher as his own, but chose NOT to adopt her and change her last name out of respect for her father who had also attended Floydada High School; and was killed in WWII. Sam worked for the Texas Highway Department for 27 years and was a Farmers Insurance Agent, he sold real estate, drove a school bus, and served as Floyd County Commissioner. Sam and Audrey were active in the First Christian Church in Floydada and in Lubbock, he loved activities with the VFW and Elks Club. Their passion was traveling in their Airstream travel trailer/motor home with friends in the Wally Byam Club. They visited 49 states, Mexico and Canada from 1967 until Audrey’s death in 2007. They moved to Lubbock in 1997.

He is survived by his daughter, Katherine Asher Self and husband, Henry O Self of Kerrville, Texas, a granddaughter, Leslie Katherine Sharp and husband Lowell K. “Buddy” Sharp of Pottsboro, Texas, nephews: Charley Spence and Bill Spence, and a niece, Shirley Spence Waldrum all of North Texas.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church of Lubbock, or the VFW of Lubbock.
