William Haskew Irwin, Jr.

Age 93, passed away peacefully, Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Holston Rehabilitation Center. Born on April 5, 1924 to William Haskew Irwin, Sr. and Sarah Gustava Bowman Irwin in Powell, Tennessee.

He was a member of Washington Pike United Methodist Church and a graduate of Powell High School class of 1941. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary Burkhart Irwin; brother, Joe Irwin; sisters, Dorothy Barger and Wanda Auerbach.

Bill is survived by daughter, Janice (Charles) Chambers of Knoxville; son, Tom (Nancy) Irwin of FT. Myers, Florida; sister, Mary Nell Bloomer of Washington state; special in-laws, Robert Auerbach, Georgia Irwin, Ann and Ted Carlson, Henry and Gene Burkhart and Bertha Kent along with several nieces and nephews, and special friend, Elsie Wilkerson.

Bill was a retired postal supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service. Upon retirement he became an avid writer and publisher of many family genealogy books. Bill enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, both watching and playing golf, and watching his Tennessee Volunteers. In addition, "Grandbill" as he was so lovingly known by, tremendously enjoyed the events and lives of his three grandchildren; Jenny (Bryan) Payne, Elizabeth (Justin) Harness all of Knoxville, and Zachary Irwin of Ft. Myers, Florida, and was so proud of his four great-grandchildren; Asher and Andrew Harness, Abby and Molly Payne.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Mortuary, 1304 Oglewood Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee. The family and friends will meet at Lynnhurst Cemetery, 2300 W. Adair Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37918 at 10:00 a.m. Saturday the 19th for graveside service and interment.

In lieu of flowers, Bill has requested memorials be made to Tennessee Hemophilla and Bleeding Disorder Foundation, 203 Jefferson Street, Smyrna, Tennessee 37167, or Washington Pike United Methodist Church, 2241 Washington Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37917.
