James Monroe Thompson, also sometimes known as John Monroe Thompson, was born in 1872 in Talledega County, Alabama to the marriage of William H. Thompson and the former Mary Jane Roberts. He was their third of seven known children. One of his older brothers was named John W. Thompson. This tends to confuse matters when James appears as John on some official documents. Whether those incidents were simple clerical errors or a case of being either an alias or a stolen identity, one can only wonder.

By the turn of the 20th century, the elder Thompsons had relocated to Erath County, Texas. His parents spent their last years there. Their third son, James, would spend most of his life in Louisiana, the "Pelican State".

On May 17, 1905 James Thompson married Miss Naomi Arnold in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. The couple would bring four beautiful daughters and one strapping son into the world between 1905 and 1921. There is confusion on the year of the son's birth. He doesn't appear on the 1920 census but other government documents support the 1919 birth date.

It was not long after the birth of their son when the couple decided to go their separate ways, each to make new lives for themselves.

James died in West Monroe, Ouachita Parksh, Louisiana in 1959. The disposition of his remains is unknown.
