James R Hughes was born the son of Silas and Parthena Weddle Hughes on January 3, 1846, possibly in Jackson County, IN.

His parents were married on July 5, 1843 in Jackson County, IN. It is recorded in Jackson county marriages 1837 - 1849 Volume A.

According to the 1860 Federal census, Silas and Parthena Hughes was living in Owen, Jackson County, IN. Silas was listed as 36 and was from NC; Parthena was 37 and was born in IN; James R Hughes was 14, born in IN; and two siblings Mary E Hughes 11, born in IN and Alexr R Hughes 7, born in IN. By the 1870 Census, two other children were listed N.A. Hughes 9, and L.A. Hughes 3.

James R Hughes had married Nancy Jane Brown in 1866. In the 1870 Federal census James and Nancy had three children - D.C. Hughes aged 3; and twins M.E. Hughes and E.A. Hughes aged 3 months. They were living in Owen, Jackson County, IN.

In the 1880 Federal census, James and Jane Hughes were living in Owen, Jackson county. James was listed as a farmer and they had the following children: Daniel aged 13; Minnie and Emma aged 10; Ora and Cora aged 7; and Elmer aged 2. Nancy Jane's widowed mother Jemima Brown was also living with them.

By the 1900 Federal census, James and Nancy J Hughes were living in Owen, Jackson county. Nancy's mother Jemima aged 76 was also living with them; as well as Emma aged 30; Cora Leatherman aged 25; Elmer aged 21; Thomas aged 17 and grandson Goldon Moore aged. 3.

OBITUARY:

HUGHES - James R. Hughes died at his home in Brownstown Thursday, January 13, 1910, of lagrippe, aged 64 years. Deceased was born in Owen township in 1846, and he was the father of eight children. He is survived by his wife and three children, via: Mrs. Emma Beavers, of Perkin, Ind.; Mrs. Ora Moore, of Borden, Ind., and Tom, of this place; also one grandson. The funeral services were held at the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Eld. W.E. Payne officiating, followed by internment in Fairview cemetery.
