Dr. Gideon Beriah Frazier, a Quaker, was the first physician in Salem, Henry County, Iowa. Quakers first settled in Iowa in 1835 when Isaac Pidgeon, his wife Phoebe, and their seven children settled on Little Cedar Creek about a mile south from where Salem would be settled.

In June of 1837 Gideon Frazier and his family arrived in Salem, along with the families of his brothers Stephen Frazier and Rev. Thomas Frazier. They and several other families from the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Wayne County, Indiana, journeyed to Salem in seven wagons and with several head of livestock. Four weeks later, the family of Gideon's father-in-law Stephen Hockett, Sr. and other Quaker families arrived at Salem.

Gideon Frazier was born November 25, 1790, in Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Francis Henry Frazer and Elizabeth Stanley. Like his brother Isaac, Francis chose to spell his name without the "i". Gideon married Ann Hockett, the daughter of Stephen and Margaret (Thornburg) Hockett, on May 12, 1810, at Lees Creek, Clinton County, Ohio.

Gideon and Ann had fourteen children: Stephen (1811-1871); Thomas V. (1813-1886); Margaret Joy (1815-1877); Elizabeth Hoggatt (1816-1891); Hannah Glover (1818-1853); Francis H. (1820-1892); Sarah Joy (1822-1888); Ruth Jones (1823-1859); John H. (1826-1885); Mary (1827-1827); Lydia Edwards (1828-1884); Isaac (1832-1834); Levi (1834-1860); and Martha Shafer (1835-1877).

Gideon's wife Ann died on February 15, 1850. On April 23, 1851, he married Hannah Wood, the widow of Samuel Gray and John Embree. Gideon died on October 12, 1856 and was buried in the Friends Cemetery at Salem.
