Zaida C. Haight, formerly of Marshalltown, IA, passed away peacefully at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, IA, on March 27, 2015. She was born on March 10, 1917, on a farm near Ashton, Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Katie Elizabeth (Becker) Kersten. She graduated from Rochelle High School in Rochelle, Illinois, and later took a number of business and secretarial courses. She married C. Virgil Haight on December 28, 1941, and was married for 70+ years until Virgil passed away in June 2012. After many years as a home-maker, she served as school secretary at Rogers Elementary School in Marshalltown, Iowa, for 17 years until her retirement. Zaida participated in a number of civic organizations in Marshalltown and was a devout member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown for over 60 years, serving as treasurer for 17 years, on many committees and was a member of the United Presbyterian Women (UPW) and the Elizabeth Circle. Her passion was supporting the work of a number of Presbyterian missionaries throughout the world, often writing letters to as many as a dozen at a time and hosting them in her home when they returned to the United States. She served as chair of the First Presbyterian Mission Overseas Committee for 18 years, was named the Outstanding Senior Presbyterian by the North Central Iowa Presbytery for her mission support, and received recognition from the local UPW for her years of service to the overseas mission corps.

Zaida was a life-long learner, reader and current-events enthusiast up until the end. She instilled in her children her strong work ethic, her sense of values and right and wrong, and her passion for education.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her brother, Adrian Kersten and her sister-in-law, Janice Kersten.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Sandra (Larry) Miller, of Council Bluffs, IA; Thomas (Susan) Haight, of St. Petersburg, Fla; and Timothy (Wendy) Haight, of Grimes, IA; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Norma Haight, of Winfield, IA, and many nieces and nephews including Pamela (Clark) Lumsden, of Dixon, IL.

Following a private family burial, a memorial service for Zaida will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Center Street, Marshalltown, IA, on Monday, March 30, 2015, at 11:00 AM, followed by a luncheon in the Church Fellowship Hall. Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the following: First Presbyterian Church, Mercy Hospice of Johnston, 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston, IA 50131, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

The family wishes to acknowledge the care and support of the staff of Mercy Hospice Johnston, especially Michal Thompson, and Kennybrook Village and for the love and many kindnesses they provided to Zaida and her family each day during her years at Kennybrook.
