Fred Allen Holmes, 83, resident of 200 Woodlawn Street, husband of Joanne Stanley Holmes, passed away August 9, 2017, at Hospice House. Born September 29, 1933, in Coats NC, he was a son of the late John and Leddie Byrd Holmes. He was a 1952 graduate of Coats High School and was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served aboard the USS Lake Champlain. Mr. Holmes was retired from Monsanto and was also formerly employed with Crosscreek Mall, Morningside Assisted Living and USDA Farm Surveys. A member of Harris Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Kingsmen Sunday School Class of the church and was a Charter Member and Past Treasurer of Northwest Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 58 years, are two sons, Steven Holmes of Greenwood and David (Gloria) Holmes of Ware Shoals; three brothers, Benny (Carol) Holmes of Chesapeake VA, Devon (Frances) Holmes of Raleigh NC, and Jackie Holmes of Lancaster PA; a daughter-in-law, Annette Holmes of Hodges; grandchildren, Steven (Tera) Holmes, Jr. of Vacaville CA, Amber (Andrew) Nedwick of Lexington, Casey Holmes and Justin Holmes, both of Greenwood; great-grandchildren, Allie Holmes, Jace Holmes, Savannah Nedwick and Sophia Nedwick. He was predeceased by a brother, Stacey Holmes. Services with Military Honors in the Oakbrook Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum. Burial in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Blyth Funeral Home.
