A tragic event happened the evening of Christmas Eve on December 24, 1776.
An army of British soldiers invaded her home and took the life of Phebe Vail Turner. She was 64 years of age, a widow and had undoubtedly faced one of the most horrific encounters imaginable.

Phebe was the daughter of Samuel Jr. Vail (1678-1733) and Abigail (Hadden?) 1685-1724, the oldest daughter, raised in Westchester County, NY.

Phebe married Daniel Turner in 1731, Westcheser County NY. Source: Purchase Monthly Meeting Records.

They resided in North Salem, Westchester County where Daniel died in 1746, at age 44 years. His will recorded March 18, 1746 in Westchester County, NY.

Phebe's will was dated July 20, 1770 and took more than fifteen years to be recorded. The date given: 3 June, 1786. As noted from historian, William P Vail; "The delay in probating Phebe's will illustrates the confusion of the time of the Revolution and the years following".

Update : Anonymous on 12 Oct 2021, I still doubt that she was murdered in North Salem, especially since in her will she says of "the Borough of Westchester." and she was not buried in North Salem. Some mysteries may not yield answers! (Susan Thompson, North Salem historian) I suspect she had moved south by then, as there are no records of British troops in our area that year or even later in the war.
