George Cootes was my great grandfather. At one time he was buried at the Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery at Buckner Blvd and Scyene Road. When they paved and widened Scyene Road, he had to be moved. According to Annie Berry, his wife, Harriett, who wasn't feeling well at the time, asked some neighbors to go with the people who were going to move George and make sure everything was done right. It is said that when they moved the casket, Harriet had the silver handles removed and sold them.

George and Harriett only had a small rose concrete stone at their graves. I applied for the tombstone he has now from the government and when we got it put on the grave, I called all the descendants I could find and we had a ceremony dedicating his tombstone. There are about four other spaces with them surrounded by a small concrete curb.

I haven't been able to find out where George came from or any thing about his family before him. He lived somewhere south of Dallas and came to Dallas to join the Army for the Civil War. He was a Private in Company H., 6th Regiment, Texas Calvary, Confederate States Army. He died in or around Dallas February 26, 1894. He was born March 10, 1833. His first wife's name was Nancy (?). She died and he married my great grandmother Harriett Coats Johnston Cootes. Her first husband Joseph Johnston died in the Civil War.

George and Nancy had three sons, Hiram born 1859, William born 1866, and George W. born 1869. After Nancy's death, George married Harriett, who had two daughters, Susan J. Johnston born 1862 and Cora E. Johnston born 1864. George and Harriett had five (possibly six) children. The oldest was Henry Andrew "Andy" Cootes (born September 10, 1872). Others were James B. and Lou Anna (twins, born 1874), Maud Jane (born 1877), and Ida May (born 1880). They may have had a daughter named Delia.
