Obituary for Carl Bennett

Carl was born on the 14th of August, 1930 in Promise City, Iowa. He was the firstborn son of the late Oscar Daniel Bennett and Velma Eloise (Fetters) Bennett. When Carl was a young boy the family moved to a farm near Powersville, Missouri. Carl had many fond memories of a boyhood spent there. The family then returned to Promise City in 1946, and Carl graduated from Corydon High School in 1948.

In January of 1951, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country as a boilerman on the USS Hailey.

On June 2, 1952 at the Mt. Ayer Church of Christ, Carl was united in marriage to Evelyn Louise Goben. During the early years of their marriage the couple lived in Charleston, South Carolina. Carl was stationed there with the Navy working in the ship yard.

In 1955, Carl and Evelyn returned home to Promise City with their firstborn son in tow. They settled on a farm North of Promise City where they began the task of making a life on the land that they now called home. Carl began to plant crops, harvest them, and pray over them. Baby calves were born in the spring and weaned in the fall, pigs were farrowed and lambs were bottle-fed. The growing seasons passed and a life was built. The farm was not the only thing growing, the family grew as well. Four more sons, and a daughter would join them. As the family increased in size, the house did not. The saying: "love grows best in little houses" was most certainly true on the Bennett farm. When the children began to get older, Carl wasted no time teaching them to value hard work. Many memories were made, and lots of lessons were learned. Milking cows in the early morning, raking and baling hay in the hot summer sun and so many other jobs on the farm. Carl particularly enjoyed helping his children to raise and show animals for 4-H.

Carl had a love for people and a generous spirit. It was often Evelyn who made it possible for him to be so generous. Carl loved to share meals with others, a full dinner table made him happy. He would often invite friends, or neighbors, or even strangers over at a moment's notice. It was Evelyn who was then charged with feeding a crowd using a pot roast and too few potatoes.
Carl and Evelyn retired after 40 years of farming and moved to Corydon in 1995. Carl was never one to sit still for long so he took over his son's mowing business as a retirement project. When mowing did not keep him busy enough he got just a "few" cattle for good measure. On June 2nd, 2017, Carl and Evelyn were blessed to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Carl was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for his whole life.

Left to mourn the loss of Carl are: wife, Evelyn Bennett, six children: Daniel Bennett (Nancy), David Bennett (Cheryl), Duane Bennett (Rebecca), Donald Bennett (Debbie), Carla Gall (Brian), Daryl Bennett (Kathy Katzer), nine grandchildren: Nathan Bennett (Michelle) Annette Harvey (Dustin), Leo Bennett, Kate Bennett, Megan Bennett, Ryan Bennett (Sarah), Lauren Bennett, Renae Beebout (Aaron), Courtney Karns, nine great grandchildren: Hunter & Aubrey Bennett, Kinley, Reese and Bennett Harvey, Desmond Bennett, Elijah, Tollen & Isaiah Beebout and a sister, Dixie Larson (Carl). He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Doris Johnson, infant brothers, Melvin and great granddaughter: Maya Harvey.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will immediately follow at New York Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, August 7, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to HCI Care Services and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com
