Betty Jo was born January 2, 1933 at her parent's home in Hildebran, NC. She was the eldest child of the late Marion Posey Bridges and Mattie Iola Mosteller, and was proceeded in death by her parents, her late husband Murl Ray Smart, Sr., infant son Jerry Ray Smart, and brother Charles Lamar Bridges, Sr.
Betty Jo was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Hildebran. She served her church in many capacities from Sunday School to WMU, GA's, Acteens, and multiple other positions. She loved light houses and had visited each light house along the NC coast, while vacationing many times with her family; the Currituck Light House being her favorite.
