Ethel Saloma Firth was born to George and Julia (Smith) Reams Firth. When she was three years old, her family moved to Nebraska, where she grew up and educated in the Ellsmere Nebraska area. Ethel had three brothers; Arthur, Johnie and Walter, and two sisters, Charlotte and Jenny. Jenny was her half-sister.

On August 16, 1912, she married Reverend Lewis Alexander Sharp at Brewster, Blaine Co., Nebraska. The couple homesteaded in the Ellsmere area, where Ethel was a housewife. Rev. Sharp died in 1943 and Ethel made homes in Nebraska and Kansas; later moving back to Nebraska. To this union, five children were born: Vernon Sharp, Clarence Sharp, Lillie Spiker, Elmer Sharp and Elnora Sharp, who were twins.

In about 1950, Ethel married Skulie Hallgrimson. They lived in Wichita, Kansas and later divorced.

On August 3, 1960, she married Louis "Ed" McClurg at Johnstown Nebraska, after which the couple made their home in Long Pine. In 1970 they moved to Ainsworth and in 1972 moved to Grand Island. Her husband Ed died in 1983 and Ethel continued to make her home in Grand Island.

Ethel was a member of the Baptist Faith and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed embroidery and regularly made tablecloths, pillowcases, doilies, and little throws for her children and grandchildren.
