Centreville - Earl Melvin “Smitty” SMITH, age 70, of Centreville, Mich., passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at his home.

He was born Aug. 4, 1937, in Branch County, Mich., a son to the late Walter and Zenna (LINDSEY) SMITH.

In June of 1956, he married Joyce RASLER. This marriage ended in divorce after 31 years.

Earl was employed by Darling in Bronson before going to Americraft Carton (Sturgis Carton). He retired in 2003 after 33 years and then worked as a farm hand in Centreville.

He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corp., joining in 1955. He enjoyed raising 4-H goats and calves for his grandchildren, tractor and truck pulls, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his children Theresa (James) CATES and Laurie YOUNG, both of Burr Oak, Kathy (Wayne) JOHNLOZ of Bronson, Robbin (Andrew) WALSH of Sturgis, Rolinda (Andy) HUNNINGTON of Norway, Iowa, and Virginia (Bob) WHITE of Allegan, Mich.; longtime companion Marlene MOSHER of Three Rivers, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister: Margaret HOPKINS of Bronson; brother Arthur SMITH of Coldwater, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Delmer, Charles, and Gerald; sisters, Alma, Edith, Helen, Francis, Winifred, and two younger siblings.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rosenberg-Schipper Funeral Home of Sturgis.

Funeral services celebrating Earl’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Pastor Randy Evans, New Beginnings Church, officiating.

Memorial donations may be directed to the family, envelopes are available at the funeral home.
