John was born on February 26, 1928 in Thornton, KY, the seventh and last child of John Wesley Amburgey, Sr. and Carrie (Hammonds) Amburgey, preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carmel and Glennis, and sisters Alpha, Alma, Edra, and Jean. He was the loving husband of Genella Fay (Boggs) Amburgey for 69 years.

John (Junior) grew up in Eastern Kentucky near Whitesburg and graduated from high school at Stuart Robinson School, a boarding school in Blackey, KY in 1944 because the school buses could not run during WWII.

He attended the University of Kentucky then received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University in 1953.

He was immediately hired by Union Carbide in Oak Ridge where he worked at the K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant and was in on the ground floor of the development of the gas centrifuge program in the early 60's. He became a Professional Engineer and a Department head and retired from Martin Marietta after serving 39 years. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and Glenwood Baptist Church of Oak Ridge for many years.

He was a devoted husband and father and loved playing basketball, fishing, boating, and working on his lake house on Watts Bar Lake. He and Genella enjoyed their retirement years traveling, square dancing, and spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren both at the lake and at their beach condo in Gulf Shores, AL.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Debbie Dillener (Jeff) of Harriman; his son John, III, and special friend Elizabeth Lubar of Spanish Fort, AL; his grandchildren Chris Fowlkes (Nancy) of Oak Ridge, Carrie Curley (John) of Knoxville, Sarah Amburgey Vaughn (Kenny) of Albertville, AL, Alex Amburgey of Tuscaloosa, AL, Katie Clark of Harriman, and Kara Brown (Remington) of Knoxville.
