Elma was born on September 24, 1933 in Montour Falls, a daughter of the late Harold S. and Dorothy M. (Bennett) Champion. She worked briefly at the Seneca Army Depot when she was young prior to devoting her life to the family farm in Lodi. A devoted wife and mother, Elma always cooked enough food to feed an army, all while encouraging her children and grandchildren to dance and listen to the music she had playing. Her crafting talents ranged everywhere from embroidery to making photo albums to silk flower arrangements.
Elma is survived by a daughter, Wanda Updike; daughter in law, Vicki Updike; five grandchildren, Tammy Updike, Lori (Wayne) Schrader, Stacie (Greg) Mastin, Mike (Fawn) Updike, and Sarah (Austin) May; seven great grandchildren, Cassie, David, Mark, Davin, Kevin, Konnor, and Rylee; three brothers, Robert, Lester, and Ralph Champion; two sisters, Marjorie McCheyne and Yvonne Ward; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Elma was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo in 1994; son David Updike; grandson, David Updike Jr.; three brothers, Calvin, Jack, and Harold Champion; and a sister, Jean Beaman.
