Elzie Benson Stephens was born near Konawa, Oklahoma on March 8, 1929, the 2nd of 8 children to Owen and Bessie Stephens.

He grew up in rural areas near Jay, Oklahoma, graduating from Jay High School in 1948. On his 21st birthday, March 8, 1949, Elzie married his high school sweetheart, Juanita Earp. They were married for more than 65 years before she passed in December of 2014.

Elzie joined her and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in his heavenly home on July 30, 2017 at the age of 88 years.

Elzie was a hard worker, working at various jobs in his younger years. He says one of his favorites was operating a saw mill making railroad ties. Later he owned and operated the NAPA Auto Parts Store and service station/garage in Jay, Oklahoma. His business also included a wrecker service.

He loved playing golf and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, gardening and spending time with his family. In later life, he enjoyed occasionally pulling his fifth wheel across country, vacationing with friends.

He was faithful in every area of his life, as a devoted husband, a loving father, and a dedicated servant to the Lord. He served in many areas of the church including Bible teacher, Sunday school superintendent and caring for the lawn for many years. He also served as a deacon on the church board for about 60 years.

For about 25 years he was on the Jay volunteer fire department, serving as fire chief for a number of those years.

Elzie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a granddaughter, Misty Youngblood, and three sisters; Freeda Stephens, Norma Loftis and Eveline Bernard.

He is survived by his children; Sandy Harmer and husband Phil, of Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma, Sherry Youngblood and husband Don of Jay, Oklahoma, Bruce Stephens and wife Sherri, of Jay, Oklahoma, grandchildren Ty Harmer and Haley Harmer, Jonathan Youngblood and wife Cassie, Candice Jernigan and husband Jimmy, Brent Stephens and wife Nita and great-grandchildren Josie, Halland, Jasper, Judson, Jasmine, Sajni and Luke. His surviving siblings are Enda Fox, Maxine Mattox, Ellis Stephens and Imogean Schmidt.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Luginbuel Funeral Home in Jay, Oklahoma from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. A celebration of life will be at 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Jay First Assembly of God. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jay First Assembly Building Fund
